Youn Bummo Appointed President of Gwangju Biennale Foundation

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has officially appointed renowned art historian and curator Youn Bummo as its new President. The announcement was made on July 17, following approval by the Foundation’s board of directors.

Youn’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Foundation, as preparations are underway for the 2025 Gwangju Design Biennale and the 16th Gwangju Biennale in 2026. His leadership is expected to bring new momentum and a strong vision to these upcoming editions.

Youn Bummo’s illustrious career spans over four decades, marked by significant contributions to Korean art history, particularly in the field of Minjung Misul (People’s Art). As former Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Youn has been instrumental in shaping contemporary art discourse and curatorial practice in South Korea. His extensive experience includes the curation of major exhibitions that have attracted wide public attention, alongside his pivotal role in establishing key cultural institutions such as the Hoam Museum of Art (now Leeum Museum of Art), Seoul Arts Center, and Lee Ungno Museum.

Youn’s longstanding relationship with the Gwangju Biennale dates back to its inception in 1995, when he served as an executive committee member and curated the inaugural special exhibition. He returned in 2014 to curate the poignant exhibition “Sweet Dew, 1980 and After” during the 10th edition.

Reflecting on his appointment, Youn stated:

“It is a solemn honor to be appointed President, thirty years after I participated in the founding of the Gwangju Biennale. As mandated in the Biennale’s founding declaration, I will uphold the identity of the Gwangju Biennale as a leading platform for the production of contemporary culture and art, grounded in the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement and the artistic tradition of Gwangju.”

Youn succeeds Lee Sang-Gap, former Deputy Mayor for Culture and Economy of Gwangju Metropolitan City, who served as interim president. His inauguration ceremony is scheduled for July 21, following his official appointment by Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-Jung.
