IBA Stage: 9th Biennale Gherdëina
July 16, 2024 (Tuesday)
10:00 am (Ortisei/GMT+2)
This month we are very excited to have with us one of the most interesting biennials taking place in a non-urban environment: Biennale Gherdëina. Set in the beautiful landscape of the Dolomites, Biennale Gherdëina has caught the attention of the public and the art world through a very thoughtful approach to its natural surroundings as well as its local traditions. Biennale Gherdëina takes place in Val Gardena, rooted in an exchange between people, animals, plants, minerals, stories, legends, languages and traditions. With a core of new site-specific productions alongside existing works, the artists engage in dialogue with the local nature and culture, creating extraordinary moments of encounter.
The biennial started as a parallel event to MANIFESTA 7 in 2008 to bring a new experience of cultural diversity to the public space of Ortisei. Edition after edition, Biennale Gherdëina has expanded its horizons, embracing neighboring communities and evolving into an ambitious international project, while always remaining deeply connected to its roots in South Tyrol. Set in the breathtaking landscape of the Dolomites and in dialogue with its human and non-human inhabitants, the artworks often originate as site-specific projects and are produced on site thanks to the collaboration of Val Gardena craftsmen and their unique and ancient experience in woodworking.
To have the possibility to hear and discuss with the individuals behind biennials has been a key component of what we believe IBA can offer to our members and the wider public and we value your participation through our live streams. As always IBA Stage events are meant as a moment to hear about a project through its makers and have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.
