As we approach our next IBA Stage, dedicated to Anozero — Bienal de Coimbra and its recently concluded sixth edition, To hold, to give, to receive, we are pleased to introduce our first guest, Carlos Antunes, Director of Anozero, Bienal de Coimbra and of the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC).
Joining us on September 3 at 4:00 PM Coimbra time (GMT+1), Carlos will help us frame the perspective on this year’s biennial from an institutional – long-term approach, discussing institutional development and the relationship between Anozero and the territory of Coimbra, its communities and the sites of cultural heritage inhabited by the biennial.
An architect by training, Carlos Antunes has been a member of Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC) since 1987 and today serves as Director of both CAPC and Anozero — Bienal de Coimbra. His longstanding involvement with CAPC certainly adds a level of interest to give us a sense of how the biennial was developed and how it is received by the artistic community in the city from his unique perspective at the intesection of architecture, contemporary art, curatorial practice, and institutional development.
His architectural practice similarly reflects an interest in how space can structure experience. Together with Désirée Pedro, Carlos founded Atelier do Corvo in Miranda do Corvo in 1996. Their work has resulted in numerous award-winning architectural projects and, in 2020, they received the AICA Prize from the International Association of Art Critics. Carlos is also a visiting professor at the University of Coimbra.

graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto. In 1996, together with Désirée Pedro, he founded the architectural studio Atelier do Corvo in Miranda do Corvo, Portugal. A member of the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC) since 1987, he is Director of CAPC and of Anozero – Bienal de Coimbra, and a visiting professor at the University of Coimbra. Together with Désirée Pedro, he has completed numerous award-winning architectural projects and, in 2020, received the AICA Prize (International Association of Art Critics). In his architectural and curatorial practice, he explores the potential of spatial dramaturgy as a structuring and enriching element of lived experience and experimentation in space.
