IBA Stage: 3rd Biennale Matter of Art

The first guest of our upcoming IBA Stage we are happy to announce is Katalin Erdődi, one of the curators of the 3rd Biennale Matter of Art. She has developed a cross-disciplinary practice through which she can pursue her approaches which vary from curatorial, to dramaturgy and writing with a focus on socially engaged art, experimental performance and artistic interventions in rural and urban spaces.
The relation to the rural is probably already visible in the choice of the title in which “grafting” places rural culture in center stage by referencing the grafting technique of creating synergies between plants and suggesting a broader use of the word in social/political terms.
In the curatorial statement, we find more references to the rural-urban divide and how in a reshaping of the relationship between these spaces lays a key to empowering voices and knowledges too often excluded from public debate. Very much resembling the grafting tecnicque the curators ask themselves “how can we create new alliances and grow stronger together?” when it comes to establishing new links between urban and rural spaces and cultures.
Katalin Erdődi (*1980, Hungary) is a curator, dramaturg, and writer based in Vienna and Budapest. Her cross-disciplinary practice spans socially engaged art, experimental performance, and artistic interventions in rural and urban public spheres. As a curator, she has worked for Steirischer Herbst (Graz), Brut (Vienna), and GfZK – Museum of Contemporary Art (Leipzig), among others, and she co-founded PLACCC Festival (Budapest), an international festival for site-specific performance and art in the public space. In 2020 Erdődi received the Igor Zabel Award Grant for her locally embedded and inclusive curatorial practice. She is currently a member of the working group SALT. CLAY. ROCK., a two-year artistic-curatorial research project at nGbK Berlin (2023–2024). She was recently appointed the new director of Trafó House of Contemporary Arts (Budapest) from 2025.
