IBA Stage is meant as an occasion for other members and the wider biennial community to experience and find out more about exhibitions taking place in less reachable destinations or in circumstances that might limit our abilities to travel. SACO Bienal taking place in Antofagasta, situated in the north of Chile, certainly falls under the former. Born in 2012 as a local arts festival SACO has since developed into a vital element of the cultural life of a region otherwise lacking any basic infrastructure for contemporary art and with little resources destined to education and social structures. SACO is a biennial born as a proposal to reduce the imbalance between the economic and the cultural local reality, establishing itself as a pole of reflection and artistic development in the world capital of copper and lithium extraction.
To tell us more about SACO we are honored to have with us Carlos Rendón, journalist, writer and cultural manager, born in the region of Antofagasta. Carlos has been in charge of the relationships area of Contemporary Art Biennial SACO for three years. He previously worked as a reporter and editor in different media, from university publications in Universidad Católica del Norte to big conglomerates with national relevance like El Mercurio de Santiago. As a cultural manager he has written for different projects within the city, combining the skills of journalism to promote arts and different cultural expressions; he also collaborated in the production and fundraising for projects of SACO Biennial, coordinating and drafting applications for institutions such as Pro Helvetia, Goethe-Institut, Wallonia Brussels, Korea Foundation, among others, raising the acknowledgement and recognition of SACO over the last years. As a writer he won numerous regional and national prizes, and has been published in several collections and fanzines.
