The Third Karachi Biennale (KB22) will take place in October / November 2022. Recently Faisal Anwar, an acclaimed Pakistani / Canadian hybrid artist was appointed as the curator. Faisal is an excellent choice because KB22 will focus on technology as the cutting edge medium of Art to create a spectacular immersive experience for audiences. To keep it relevant and inclusive, the works will engage both the low end technology of something as familiar as the cell phone, and some of the most experimental forms explored by artists.
The thematic underlines Karachi’s digital transformation: increasingly generating, connecting and speaking in the language of digital data. A city with one of the largest and most diverse populations in the world, and being the economic, philanthropic, and educational capital of Pakistan, it initially began to use technology to compensate for a dysfunctional communication infrastructure. With a population that is primarily youth, and with its experimental thrust, this voracious consumer of technology has begun to navigate the 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) narrative, which seeks new ways of making technology an intrinsic and perhaps symbiotic part of human experience. KB22 will be investigating the possibilities to conceptualize and materialize the digital liminal space as an innovation corridor of creative encounters and a site of symbolic empowerment and agency.
