Southern Survey Biennial III Opens at Project Row Houses
Southern Survey Biennial III
October 3, 2026 – February 14, 2027
Houston, Texas

We are very pleased to celebrate the opening of Southern Survey Biennial III, opening on October 3 at Project Row Houses (PRH) in Houston, Texas. The opening comes at a special moment for us at IBA, as the Southern Survey Biennial has recently joined the International Biennial Association, bringing its distinct regional perspective and its commitment to artists working across the American South into our growing international network.
Presented as Artist Round 61, the third edition brings together six artists and one collective from across the region. Their projects will unfold across PRH’s seven historic art houses on Holman Street in Houston’s Third Ward through February 14, 2027.
Launched in 2022, the Southern Survey Biennial was created to highlight the work of contemporary artists living and working in the South and to build stronger opportunities for artists based in the region. The Biennial considers the South across 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The Southern Survey Biennial offers a platform for artists whose practices are rooted in the South while asking what a regional survey can mean today. Rather than approaching the region as a single identity, it brings together different experiences, histories, materials, and artistic practices across its broad geography. Its location within Project Row Houses also places this regional conversation within an institution with a long history of connecting artistic practice, community, and place.
We are particularly happy to celebrate this edition as we welcome the Southern Survey Biennial as a new member of the International Biennial Association. Regional perspectives and different models of biennial-making are an important part of our network, and we look forward to learning more from the Southern Survey Biennial, supporting its work, and bringing its experience into conversation with our members around the world.

Round 61: Southern Survey Biennial III will be on view at Project Row Houses in Houston from October 3, 2026 through February 14, 2027.
