The 15th Kaunas Biennial, titled Life After Life, is set to open on September 12, 2025, bringing together over 30 artists and collectives from nearly 20 countries across three continents. Continuing its legacy as one of the most influential contemporary art events in the Baltic region, this edition of the Biennial will transform Kaunas into a city-wide exhibition reflecting on the moods and conditions of life in transitional times.
Curated by Adomas Narkevičius as a reflection on how creativity unfolds in periods of uncertainty, Life After Life invites artists whose practices interrogate how people and communities navigate continuous change and redefine themselves amid precarious and volatile conditions. Through diverse artistic languages—spanning installations, performances, and research-based projects—the Biennial will offer a mosaic of perspectives on resilience, adaptation, and renewal.
The artist list for Life After Life includes:
Alex Mackin Dolan (USA), Anastasija Sosunova (Lithuania), Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme (Palestine/USA), Brianna Leatherbury (USA/Netherlands), Chuquimamani-Condori & Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, Coumba Samba (USA/UK), Cudelice Brazelton IV (USA/Germany), Débora Delmar (Mexico/UK), Ella Fleck (UK), Ewa Poniatowska (Poland/UK), Gediminas G. Akstinas (Lithuania), Gerda Paliušytė (Lithuania), Jasper Marsalis (USA/UK), John Smith (UK), Kenji Ide (Japan), Ksenia Bilyk (Ukraine), Ksenia Pedan (Ukraine/Sweden), Lauren Auder & Tosia Leniarska (UK/PL), Liudmila (Milda Januševičiūtė & Miša Skalskis) (Lithuania), Lithuanian Art Workers Union (Lithuania), Lulua Alyahya (USA/Bahrain), Max Göran (Sweden/Germany), Patricija Baronaitė (Lithuania), Paulius Janušonis (Lithuania), Heritage Institute (Lithuania), Pierre Allain (France), Rat Section, Richard Sides (UK), Ruoru Mou (Italy/Netherlands), Saulė Gerikaitė (Lithuania), Tolia Astakishvili (Georgia/Germany), Trương Công Tùng (Vietnam), Phung-Tien Phan (Germany/Vietnam), Violeta Dabrilienė (with Lina Lapelytė, Augustas Serapinas, Emilija Škarnulytė and collaborators).
The 15th Kaunas Biennial will activate a diverse selection of venues across the city, further weaving the exhibition into Kaunas’ urban and historical fabric:
Historic Stumbras Factory (K. Būgos g. 7)
Kaunas Artists’ House (V. Putvinskio g. 56)
Temporary M. K. Čiurlionis Art Gallery of the Faculty of Arts and Education of Kaunas College (Mackevičiaus g. 27)
Additionally, accompanying exhibitions will be held at:
Meno Parkas Gallery (Rotušės a. 27)
Kaunas City Museum (Rotušės a. 15)
These diverse locations, ranging from industrial heritage sites to academic spaces, reflect the curatorial intention to examine transitional conditions not only thematically but spatially, encouraging visitors to move through different layers of Kaunas’ identity.
At its core, Life After Life seeks to open up conversations around the fragile ecologies of contemporary life. How does one create in an era where permanence is elusive? How do art and artists remain agents of transformation, even when systems and structures falter? In exploring these questions, the Kaunas Biennial aims to establish a dialogue not only among artists but with the city of Kaunas and its communities, fostering collective reflection on possible futures.
The 15th Kaunas Biennial will be on view from September 12 to November 23, 2025.
