The third Coventry Biennial will take place from October 2021 across Coventry and Warwickshire.
This third Biennial will be an opportunity to look back at what has made Coventry and the surrounding area unique while also reflecting on an increasingly complex world.
Coventry Biennial 2021 is called HYPER-POSSIBLE, a title that references the radical nature of our city’s history while also signifying a positive way forward. HYPER-POSSIBLE will explore the legacies of artist-led networks, activisms and pedagogies that have emerged from and through the local area since the 1960s. These mark the city as an outstanding exemplar of innovative, experimental and radical artistic practice.
Three moments in particular are critical to our thinking:
Art & Language in the 1960/1970s
The BLK Art Group in the 1980s
Cybernetic Culture Research Unit in the 1990/2000s
While dealing with different theoretical, conceptual and political concerns, each of these moments shares a committed approach to constructing supportive and caring networks while ruthlessly challenging the conventions of academia and the (art) world.
Over the coming months, as HYPER-POSSIBLE gets closer, we will be able to announce more artists that we will be working with but for the moment it is an absolute pleasure to introduce the first four artists and groups that will be making and showing new works for the third Coventry Biennial:
