IBA Stage: 8th Thessaloniki Biennale
July 13th, 2023 (Wednesday)
2pm (Thessaloniki/GMT+3)
The 8th Thessaloniki Biennale which took place between December 2022 and May 2023 included a wide range of programs and exhibitions realised by the Biennial’s organiser MOMUS. At the heart of the project was the main exhibition, curated by Maria-Thalia Carras titled “Being as Communion”. For the upcoming IBA Stage event we are extremely happy to have Maria-Thalia with us to tell us more about her project which inhabited a number of historical sites as well as museums and galleries across the city.
Maria-Thalia Carras studied history of art and literature at Cambridge University followed by a masters degree in Art History at the Courtauld Institute. She is a visual arts curator and writer based in Athens.
In 2004 she co-founded locus athens, Athens longest running non-profit arts contemporary arts initiative that over a period of 15 years curated exhibitions, commissioned new works, talks, screenings, educational programs and publications for public spaces of Athens. In 2019 she co-founded locus athens’ project space TAVROS, in the eponymous neighbourhood of Athens, with the aim of establishing an arts institution in Athens that will foster dialogue, inter-regional connectivity, and bring together divergent micro-communities whilst tackling vital social and political issues.
She has also produced artists’ films, such as Naeem Mohaiemen’s Tripoli Canceled, shortlisted for the 2018 Turner Prize, and Didem Pekün’s Araf, recipient of the 2019 Sarajevo Film Festival’s Humanitarian Prize as well as Disturbed Earth (2021) by the same artist.
Her interests lie in thinking about the politics of public space, the juncture between contemporary art and moving images, ecological activism, and fostering artistic networks in the broader geographical region.
In 2021 she was on the Jury of the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival.
As always IBA Stage events are meant as a moment to hear about a project through its makers and have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.
