IBA Stage: 22nd VideoBrasil

In September during our IBA General Assembly held in Sao Paulo our members and guests had the opportunity to visit the offices of VideoBrasil, one of the most important Contemporary Art events held in Latin America since the 80s. VideoBrasil and its founding director Solange Farkas have played a major role within IBA as well throughout the years especially since Solange became one of our board members.

We are now even more happy to have the opportunity to present the latest iteration of VideoBrasil through IBA Stage on Monday November 20th (10AM Sao Paulo/GMT-3).

This year’s edition, curated by Solange Farkas, Raphael Fonseca and Renée Akitelek Mboya which is still on view until February 25, 2024 is titled “Memory is an Editing Station” inspired by a verse by Brazilian poet Waly Salomão (1943–2003). The exhibition wants to stimulate the audience into looking at the production of artists from different generations and geographical origins questioning hegemonic conceptions of memory and established notions of time through various artistic strategies. True to its approach developed in four decades of existence this year’s main show features a set of over 100 works including textiles, painting, photography and a predominant presence of videos, 60 artists and collectives from Africa, the Americas (South, Central and North), Asia, Europe (Eastern and Portugal), the Middle East and Oceania. Differences and similarities between the productions emerge, for instance, in works by artists from Indigenous peoples from different regions of the globe, from Brazil to Australia and New Zealand. 

Videobrasil is an art platform and cultural association aimed at researching and disseminating the artistic production the regions of the world’s geopolitical South — Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Founded and directed by Solange Farkas, its network of activities includes exhibitions, shows, publications, documentaries, meetings, and artistic residencies. With more than 1,000 video works and 4,000 items, its collection is a reference in conservation of videos, video installations and performance records on the continent.
