Join us tomorrow for our next IBA Stage event and discuss together with Alia Swastika, director of Biennale Jogja and part of the curatorial team of Titen: Embodied Knowledge, Shifting Grounds its latest iteration running until November 25th. Alia is an active member of IBA since its inception and a Board Member since last year bringing an important contribution which builds on her experience at Jogja for more than a decade.
She was born in Yogyakarta and maintained a very close connection to the region especially since she joined Biennale Jogja in 2011 when she co-curated the 2011 Biennale Jogja XI with Suman Gopinath. This was the first of the Equator series for Biennale Jogja which shaped both the institution for a decade and her personal research.
Her curatorial projects include the Europalia Arts Festival, for which she designed exhibitions of Indonesian art at Oude Kerk, Amsterdam; S.M.A.K., Ghent; and MuHKA, Antwerp (2017). She also served as co-artistic director of the 9th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2012), curated a special exhibition of works by Indonesian artists for Art Dubai’s Marker programme (2012), and co-curated (with Suman Gopinath) Shadow Lines: Indonesia Meets India, Jogja Biennale XI (2011). She has worked with many Indonesian artists, including Wimo Ambala Bayang, Jompet Kuswidananto, Eko Nugroho and Tintin Wulia, Iswanto Hartono, as well as many international artists.
As always IBA Stage events are meant as a moment to hear about a project through its makers and have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.
