Joining us to discuss the latest edition of the Liverpool Biennial, titled ‘uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things‘ curated by Khanyisile Mbongwa is Dr Samantha Lackey, director of Liverpool Biennial. uMoya opened with works on display across Liverpool and Merseyside just last week, activating some of the well known exhibition venues of the city such as Tate Liverpool, The Bluecoat, FACT and OpenEye Gallery to name just a few, but also exploring new spaces in the city. Now in her third year as head of the Biennial, and since last year board member of the International Biennial Association, we look forward to hearing her insights into the status of the biennial and how the current edition came about.
Dr Samantha Lackey was Head of Collection and Exhibitions at the Whitworth (University of Manchester), where she was senior lead on the Leadership Team. Previously, she was curator at The Hepworth Wakefield (2010-16) where she delivered 40 exhibitions over 4 years as part of the team that opened the gallery in 2011 to critical acclaim. She received a PhD on the subject of surrealism in 2005, which was the context for her work as a lecturer, research fellow and her first exhibition at the Whitworth, Subversive Spaces: Surrealism and Contemporary Art.
