IBA Conversations: The Artist as Initiator
April 30, 2021
3:00pm – 4:30pm (London)

The amount of biennials across the world whose genesis saw the crucial participation of artists is quite relevant. To understand better the motivations but also the struggles to create and run an institution such as a biennial, our next IBA Conversation will give center stage to two exemplary cases, Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Matanza (Cuba), through the eyes of their founding members Sammy Baloji and Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons. We will have a unique opportunity to discuss with them what prompted their decision to initiate a biennial, what obstacles they faced along the way and what opportunities their efforts have created for other artists in the region. Understanding their often-continued double role as directors and artists, we will also understand how this experience has impacted their own artistic practice.

As always, through our IBA Conversations, we hope to initiate a wider discussion between other similar cases to give attendees the occasion to confront each others experiences and struggles and establish a knowledge base to make the model more sustainable.

We hope to see you numerous and interested on April 30th at 3pm London time!

Those who are interested in joining are asked to register here.

In order for a genuine and frank discussion to take place and due to the sensitivity of some of the subjects to be covered, these events will have limited availability with priority to be given to current members of IBA and those who are interested in joining.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@biennialassociation.org.
