IBA Conversations: Biennials for the Local Audience

After 5 months of inspiring debates and presentations of very stimulating projects which reunited the biennial community worldwide IBA Conversations comes to a first break, but not before one last occasion to discuss the relation between a biennial and its immediate surroundings.
By inviting Bose Krishnamachari, founder and director of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale and Christine Tohme founder of the arts platform Ashkal Alwan (Beirut), we want to focus on two institutions who have constructed their strategy over the years on strong ties established with their local communities. Building on their long experience we hope to develop a discussion able to describe the positive aspects but also the critical decisions needed to foster an ecosystem able to support the production and appreciation of contemporary art. Among the underlying questions we hope to tackle are how to widen the access to contemporary art and its languages, the ways in which a continuous dialogue between artists from other regions has created a dialogue with the local audience and how this has benefited and in which ways they had to challenge more conservative visions for an art institution.

In order for a genuine and frank discussion to take place and due to the sensitivity of some of the subjects to be covered, these events will have limited availability with priority to be given to current members of IBA and those who are interested in joining.
