IBA Conversations: Biennials for the Local Audience

Joining us for the last IBA Conversations with a long experience in involving the local community in one of the most organically grown biennials is Bose Krishnamachari. As an artist and independent curator Bose Krishnamachari lives and works between Mumbai and Kochi where he founded the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2012. The strong focus on education as well as the capacity to draw the local audience through a wide process of participation to the biennial itself make this a key project to discuss if we want to understand the ramifications the presence of a biennial can have locally. His passion will certainly add invaluable insights into the discussion we are hoping to have this Friday, 25th of June.
Bose Krishnamachari has exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions including ‘Bombay Maximum City’, ‘Lille 3000’, France, curated by Caroline Naphegyi (2006), ‘The Shape That Is’, Jendela and Concourse, Esplanade, Singapore (2006), Indian Art at the Swarovski ‘Crystal World, Innsbruck, Austria (2007), ‘Gateway Bombay’ at the Peabody Essex Museum (2007), ‘India Art Now’: Spazio Oberdan, Milan (2007), ‘Indian Highway’ at the Serpentine Gallery (2009), the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Norway (2009), the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Denmark (2010), the Lyon Contemporary Art Museum, the Fondazione MAXXI, Rome, 2011 and the ARTZUID Amsterdam-2011, the travelling project, LaVA
(Laboratory of Audio Visual Arts)-2007-2011 and ‘The Mirror Sees Best in the Dark’ at Emami Art Gallery, Kolkata-2019/20. His curatorial projects include the seminal exhibition ‘Bombayx17 at Kashi Art Gallery, Mattancherry-2004, ‘The Bombay Boys’, New Delhi-2004, ‘Double‐Enders,’ A travelling show – Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Kochi-2005, ‘KaaM’, Aicon Gallery, New York -2005, ‘The ‘MaaRKERS’, Bodhi Art, Mumbai-2006, ‘SPY’ Museum Art Gallery, (organized by The Guild Art Gallery), Mumbai, ‘Soft Spoken’, NCPA, (organized by Bombay Art Gallery), Mumbai, ‘AF-FAIR’; 1X1 Contemporary and 1X1 Gallery, Dubai-2008. Guest curator of the Indian pavilion, ARCO‐Madrid-2009. In 2009, Curated ‘Platform’, India Pavilion at ‘ Art Stage, Singapore-2014. Krishnamachari created Gallery BMB in South Mumbai with a vision to bring the best national and international art to India. ‘ Her Work is Never Done’, 26 young Indian women artists at Gallery BMB-2010. He is the co-founder of the Kochi Biennale Foundation and founding President. He was Artistic Director and Co-Curator of India’s first Biennale – The Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012, Director of Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020. Bose Krishnamachari curated ‘For an Image, Faster than Light’, first edition of the Yinchuan Biennale in Yinchuan, MOCA, China-2016. He was a columnist, ‘Everyone is a Camera’ for The Week magazine for 3 years. He won many national and International fellowships and awards, He was also a
jury member at the international and national institutional curatorial and artist awards. Bose is known for his patronage towards young Indian artists and is also an educator.
