Curators and Dates Announced for Liverpool Biennial 2027
5 June – 12 September 2027
Liverpool, United Kingdom
Liverpool Biennial
Liverpool Biennial has announced that Lucía Sanromán and Aimee Harrison will serve as Co-Curators for the 14th edition of the Biennial, taking place from 5 June to 12 September 2027 across historic buildings, art galleries, and throughout the city.
As the UK’s largest free festival of contemporary visual art, Liverpool Biennial has, for more than two decades, played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural landscape of the city and fostering international dialogue through contemporary art. Each edition activates a network of venues across Liverpool while engaging with the city’s many communities, histories, and urban spaces. Further details about the curatorial concept and participating artists for the 2027 edition will be announced later this year.
Lucía Sanromán, currently Chief Curator at Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City, is an internationally respected curator known for developing socially engaged and civic-oriented artistic projects. Her practice spans exhibitions, research, and public programmes that explore the relationship between contemporary art and the social sphere.
She will work alongside Aimee Harrison, who has been part of the Liverpool Biennial team since 2019 as Curator of Learning. Throughout her career, Harrison has developed artist projects in collaboration with a wide range of communities, including children and young people, older adults, migrant communities, individuals within the criminal justice system, and people in addiction recovery. Harrison’s appointment to the co-curatorial role is supported by The Ampersand Foundation, which will enable her secondment to the position for the 2027 festival.
Lucía Sanromán, Co-Curator, Liverpool Biennial 2027, commenting on her appointment said:
“Few global art biennials have so consistently contributed to place-based and socially engaged art practice, and to my own understanding of this genre, as Liverpool Biennial. It is a privilege to continue to expand and grow this legacy with my Co-Curator Aimee Harrison. Aimee has unmatched experience in creating art projects and programmes in collaboration with children and youth in Liverpool and brings unique vision to her work, as well as a set of values regarding the key role of art in society which is unusual in our field. At a moment when the values of community and collectivity are being constantly tested, Liverpool Biennial 2027 suggests a path forward through art, offering a deep dive into the experiences of a group whose most marked characteristic is perhaps invention and imagination.”
Aimee Harrison, Co-Curator, Liverpool Biennial 2027, said:
“I feel privileged to co-curate the 14th edition of Liverpool Biennial and am looking forward to working alongside Lucía Sanromán. Her expansive, research-led practice complements my own socially rooted, community-led approach in a way that feels both generous and generative. Having worked with communities in Liverpool for over 17 years, it means a lot to realise this Biennial in my home city. Together with Lucía and our Liverpool Biennial colleagues, I am excited to shape a festival for everyone that is grounded in the experiences of children and young people.”
Building on the Legacy of Liverpool Biennial
The appointment of Sanromán and Harrison follows the 13th edition of Liverpool Biennial, BEDROCK, which took place from 7 June to 14 September 2025 and was curated by Marie-Anne McQuay. The 2027 festival will continue the Biennial’s long-standing commitment to connecting international artistic practice with the lived experiences of Liverpool’s communities.
Dr Samantha Lackey, Director, Liverpool Biennial, commented:
“We are absolutely delighted to have both Aimee and Lucía at the helm for Liverpool Biennial 2027. This model of co-curation provides opportunity for reciprocal learning, combining an authentic and committed understanding of Liverpool with an international perspective. I look forward to working with Aimee and Lucía over the coming months, as we begin to shape the 2027 festival alongside our regional, national and international partners.”
Liverpool Biennial is supported by Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council, and founding supporter James Moores.
Further details about Liverpool Biennial 2027, including participating artists and programme highlights, will be announced later in 2026.
