“IN BEPPU” is an annual arts festival inviting one internationally active artist or artist group to Beppu for the realization and exhibition of a piece utilizing the city’s regional characteristics. This year, Beppu invited Anish Kapoor and are showing his three projects: “Sky Mirror”, “Void Pavilion V” and “The exhibition Concept of Happiness” in Beppu park.
Beppu is one of the world’s greatest hot-spring areas, a medium-scale city located in Kyushu island in Japan. The landscape of Beppu is well-known for its rising steam puffing here and there all over the city. “Anish Kapoor in BEPPU” was designed to capture certain special qualities of Beppu: the groundwater heated by the magmatic activity of the earth boiling over; becoming steam and rising toward the sky; becoming rain and returning to the land. His new work, Void Pavilion V, appears as an entryway inviting us to the ends of the universe. The exhibition Concept of Happiness, shown in a temporary pavilion, presents a space imagining the interior of the body and the magmatic activity of the ground: the pavilion is replete with energies welling up, attempting to overflow from within. Finally, Sky Mirror, too, might figure as an entryway — connecting us to the heavens, or to somewhere else entirely.
