The Biennale of Sydney has launched an open call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the position of Artistic Director of the 26th Biennale of Sydney (2028). This call invites visionary curators and cultural producers from around the world to lead one of the most significant and long-standing platforms for contemporary art in the Asia-Pacific region.

Since its founding in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney has commissioned and presented the work of more than 2,400 artists from over 130 countries and territories, establishing itself as a vital site for artistic experimentation and exchange. The Biennale continues to play a central role in connecting Australia’s contemporary art scene with global discourses, embedding bold, creative, and critically engaged exhibitions within the cultural life of the city.

As the Biennale approaches its 26th edition, the organisation seeks a highly motivated and dynamic Artistic Director—or Artistic Director team— to shape the artistic vision for 2028. Candidates are invited to articulate their approach through a Statement of Intent that outlines their vision for the edition, their motivation for taking on the role at this time, and the artistic ideas or themes they wish to explore.

Applicants should submit:

  • A Statement of Intent (up to 500 words or two pages)

  • A current CV (maximum two pages)

Expressions of Interest close on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 5pm AEDT.

The Biennale of Sydney is committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive workplace and strongly encourages applications from First Nations people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, and those with diverse life experiences.
