Introducing Anne Davidian: Curatorial Team of the 9th Asian Art Biennial
We are excited to introduce the curatorial team of the 9th Asian Art Biennial, leading up to their participation in the upcoming IBA Stage event. Our next feature is on Anne Davidian, an Armenian-born curator and editor whose work explores alternative social imaginaries with a focus on communal forms.
Anne Davidian is a curator and researcher exploring alternate imaginaries for organising communal and political life. Her practice engages in cross-disciplinary inquiries and experiments with exhibition, performative, and editorial forms.
Davidian is currently the co-curator of the 2024 Asian Art Biennial in Taiwan and the curator of the opening festival at the new Almaty Museum of Arts (summer 2025).
She initiated What Makes an Assembly? Stories, Experiments, and Inquiries, co-edited with Laurent Jeanpierre (Sternberg Press, 2022), a cross-disciplinary publication on forms of assembling across histories and geographies. As an editor, she conceived En Presence des Images, a literary series questioning the images of collective memory for the French daily Libération in collaboration with LE BAL (2021), and coordinated Jim Shaw: The Hidden World (Koenig Books, 2014), a compendium of American didactic and religious propaganda.
In 2022, she curated Gharīb, the Pavilion of Armenia at the 59th Venice Art Biennale, featuring Andrius Arutiunian’s exploration of sonic dissent, and co-commissioned an assembly space for Centre Pompidou, Paris designed by the architects’ collective raumlabor. Since 2019, she has served as the artistic director of the Evens Arts Prize, with the 2023 edition focusing on critical imaginaries of AI and algorithmic politics.
Davidian contributed to the launch of experimental art spaces: Chalet Society in Paris (2012–2015) as co-director with Marc-Olivier Wahler, and Kassandras in Athens (2016–2017) as co-founder with Diplomates. She was responsible for the French branch of the Evens Foundation (2010–2023), for which she developed research and experimentation projects at the intersections of arts, social sciences, and critical education.
Born in Armenia, Davidian trained in comparative literature and holds a postgraduate degree in aesthetics from the Panthéon-Sorbonne. She currently lives and works between Paris and Yerevan.
