Introducing Fang Yen-Hsiang: Curatorial Team of the 9th Asian Art Biennial
We are excited to introduce the curatorial team of the 9th Asian Art Biennial, leading up to their participation in the upcoming IBA Stage event. Our first feature is on Fang Yen-Hsiang, a curator, researcher, and artist whose work bridges contemporary art and social practices.
Born in 1981 in Taipei, Taiwan, Fang Yen-Hsiang holds an MFA from the National Taiwan University of Arts, Graduate School of Plastic Arts. With a career spanning curation, art criticism, and artistic research, his work explores contemporary aesthetics, new media, moving-image, and the evolving landscape of contemporary art institutions in Asia. His practice is informed by a deep engagement with institutional structures, alternative spaces, and the ways in which art engages with social realities.
Fang’s extensive curatorial and institutional experience reflects his commitment to fostering diverse artistic dialogues. From 2018 to 2023, he served as Assistant Curator at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, where he played a pivotal role in shaping exhibitions that engaged with regional and global contemporary art discourses. Prior to that, he was a Curator at the Taipei Contemporary Art Center (2015–2016) and has contributed significantly to the development of alternative art spaces, including Ping Pong Art Space and Open-Contemporary Art Center.
His curatorial practices include: Pingpong Art Space “Post Office” (Co-curator, 2012), Hong-Gah Museum “Climate Fictionalism” (2015), Taipei Contemporary Art Center “Portrait portrait (Co-curator, 2016), Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts/ Display – Association for Research and Collective Practice, Prague “So Far So Right: A Study of Reforms and Transitions” (2017/ 2019), Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts “South as a Place of Gathering”(Co-curator, 2019),“From Object to Cosmos”(2021), “Pan-Austro-Nesian Arts Festival”(curatorial team, 2021,) Ajiyasa, Jogja National Museum “Taiwan Pavilion in the 16th Biennale Jogja” (Executive Curator, 2021,) “Being XBeing X:Hsin-chien Huang’s Metaverse Theater” (Co-curator, 2022.)
