The Beijing Art and Technology Biennale (BATB) is entering its final month, closing on February 23, 2025. This second edition, themed Earthwise, has been open to the public since October 26, 2024, offering visitors a reflection on intelligence beyond human-centric frameworks. Curated by Fei Jun and Naiyi Wang, the biennale has brought together 50 artists and scientists from across the globe to challenge and expand our understanding of intelligence.
What does it mean to be intelligent? Earthwise invites visitors to explore intelligence beyond the human-centric framework, delving into the realms of animals, plants, machines, and planetary systems. This edition encourages rethinking intelligence as interconnected and egalitarian, as highlighted by curator Naiyi Wang: “Earthwise, as a metaphor, aims to expand the notion of intelligence from different perspectives, making us aware of the other intelligences that have been with us all along.”
The biennale also showcases two newly commissioned works by renowned creators: Oscar-winning artist Tim Yip and new media artist Wang Zhigang. These commissions highlight the biennale’s commitment to pushing boundaries in art and technology. Collaborations with institutions and research labs include Critical Media Lab, ETH AI Center, and Art of Hybrid Intelligence Lab.
Since its inception, BATB has focused on the intersection of art, science, and technology. It is conceived as an international platform for practitioners of diverse fields and fosters new artistic engagements with advanced technologies like biotechnologies, life sciences, and astrobiology. Through exhibitions, commissions, public programs, publications, and symposiums, BATB addresses pressing global challenges and envisions transformative solutions.
Under the leadership of curator Naiyi Wang, BATB continues to convene influential artists, scientists, theorists, and innovators. The biennale has solidified its role as a critical site for exploring the intersections of art, science, and technology, advancing the dialogue on humanity’s future.
