5th Mardin Biennial

We couldn’t be happier to start a new season of IBA Stage this fall with the presentation of the 5th Mardin Biennial which took place between May 20th and June 20th 2022. Taking place in Mardin, one of the most fascinating and historically rich cities in the south-eastern of Turkey, Mardin Biennial was initiated in 2010 and has since brought the attention of the art world on this city and its many cultures.
THE PROMISE OF GRASS / THE GIFT OF DISPOSSESSION as its latest edition was titled wants to, in the words of its curator Adwait Singh (Mardin Biennial’s first foreign curator in charge of the main program), challenge the idea of disposession as an existential dead-end “and can instead denote the juncture where capitalist territorialisation having come a full circle, finds its operational logics inexplicably reversed.” Developed in five venues all around the city’s main axis, the exhibition displayed works of artists from across all five continents displayed in unison with the city’s iconic architecture. Operating in a culturally sensitive environment Singh and the Biennial team including its directors Döne Otyam and Hakan Irmak, were able to transform the city for the time of the biennial in a meeting ground.
IBA Stage is an online series by the International Biennial Association in which invited biennials have the chance to deliver a presentation of their most recent projects, shaped in the way and form each biennial will feel more comfortable with. The events in this series have a live audience of registered members to participate in Q&A session moderated by the IBA team. Each event however will be streamed through our social media outlets to allow a wider audience to experience it.
