Umbral – Threshold 15th Bienal de Artes Mediales (Biennial of Media Arts – Santiago)

How can biennials interact with key moment of a country’s history such as the re-writing of Chile’s constitution? What structure for dialogue can they offer and can they become a platform for the exploration of unresolved conflicts and the scars left behind by these?
We are extremely happy to have Enrique Rivera Gallardo with us on Tuesday 29th of March to answer some of these questions while looking back at the 15th Bienal de Artes Mediales which opened in November 2021 and is still currently running in Santiago de Chile. Director of the Bienal since 2013 Enrique Rivera Gallardo has been an active member of IBA since its inception and is currently serving as one of its longer lasting board members. In his work as Director of the Media Art Biennale, Santiago, he developed research for audiovisual installations through the distribution of tangible and intangible objects in atemporal immersive contexts.
Rivera Gallardo has edited the catalogues for the 7th–15th Media Arts Biennial (2009–2022); the fifth editions of the Art, Science and Digital Culture (2009–2018); and Cybersyn, 1970–1973: Sinergia Cibernetica / Multinode-Metagame, 2002–2007, among others. His article ‘A brave electronic new world’ appeared in Arte Digital: Fraturas, preservacao proliferativa e dimensao Afetiva (Media Lab/UFG, 2014). He studied at the Chile Film School (1999) and film directing at the Universidad de Chile (2000). He earned a bachelor’s degree in art direction from the Universidad Mayor, Santiago (2012).
Rivera Gallardo was born in 1977 in Santiago, where he continues to live and work.
